How we set tile

The parts you can't see decide how it lasts

A tiled floor or shower is only as good as what's under it. Scroll through the layers.

  1. 01

    A flat, solid base

Tile and stone go down on a properly prepped, level base. Big tiles show every dip.

  2. 02

    The waterproof layer

In showers, the waterproofing behind the tile is what decides whether it lasts twenty years or fails in three. Tile and grout alone don't keep water out.

  3. 03

    A full bed of mortar

Mortar is combed out and each tile is pressed in for full contact, so there are no hollow spots to crack later.

  4. 04

    Laid out from the centre

Tiles start from a centre line, so the cut pieces at both edges match and the pattern looks planned.

  5. 05

    Grout, trim and clean-up

Joints are filled evenly, edges get their trim, and the room is cleaned up before we walk it with you.

Details you can see

Drawn to explain, photographed to prove it

Each drawing shows one detail. The photo beside it is the same detail on one of our jobs.

  • Drawing of a recessed shower niche with a hexagon mosaic back, framed all round by a mitred marble trim, the wall tile courses lining up with its top and bottom.

    Framed like a picture

Niches and feature panels get a mitred frame trim. The corners meet at clean 45° joints, and the wall courses line up with the top and bottom.

  • Cutaway drawing of a shower wall built up in layers: studs, cement board, a brass-coloured waterproof membrane, combed mortar, then marble-look tile with a framed panel.
Shower walls with large marble-look tiles above, marble subway tile below and a thin pencil liner between them

    The layer behind the tile

Tile and grout aren't waterproof on their own. The waterproof layer, shown in brass, goes on first; it decides whether a shower lasts twenty years or fails in three.

  • Drawing of a marble floor laid out from a brass centre line inside a straight black stone border.
White tile floor laid in herringbone inside a thin black tile border
    Wilson’s job

    Laid out from the centre

Herringbone and borders start from a centre line, so the pattern sits square in the room and the cut pieces at both edges match.

  • Macomb Township
  • Troy
What areas do you cover?

Roseville, Warren, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Macomb Township and Troy. If you're nearby and not sure, ask.

Do you do full bathroom and kitchen renovations?

Yes: the tile, floors and finish work, and full bathroom and kitchen renovations. If part of the job needs another contractor, their price is your price.

How do you keep a tiled shower from leaking?

Tile and grout aren't waterproof on their own. A waterproof layer goes behind the tile, on the walls and the floor of the shower, before any tile is set.

Can you fix cracked tile or failing grout?

Yes. We find out what caused it first, so the fix holds.

How do I get a price?

Send the form with a few photos and rough sizes, or call. We'll talk it through and price it clearly before anything starts.
